Train operator LNER has won an award for offering free period care products on their journeys.
LNER, which runs a direct service from Harrogate to London Kings Cross, began an emergency period care scheme in the spring of last year.
Passengers can request a ‘package for a friend’ directly from an LNER member of staff, or can scan the catering service QR code next to their seat. A team member will then discreetly deliver the products to seats.
LNER has now won the customer excellence award at the National Rail Awards in London.
Professor Dame Lesley Regan, Women’s Health Ambassador, congratulated the LNER team for its ‘groundbreaking initiative.’
She said:
The ‘package for a friend’ scheme was first introduced by LNER staff in Kings Cross who recognised that everyone should have access to period products whenever they needed them.
“Most importantly, the leadership that LNER staff have shown is resulting in this initiative being adopted by other train operators in response to the appreciative feedback from customers and staff who have benefitted from the scheme.
Tracey Barber, Senior EDI Business Partner for LNER said that she is ‘so proud,’ to see the scheme rolling out across other train operators.
She said:
Every week we help dozens of our customers access emergency period products. Previously they would have had no choice but to suffer an uncomfortable journey.
