Major new Harrogate bar set to open after £750,000 makeover
A major new bar in Harrogate is set to officially open its doors to the public on Monday.
The Mayfair Pub and Kitchen, on Parliament Street, replaces the previous Jamie Oliver restaurant.
The Stray Ferret first reported the bar would move onto the site in January last year. Now, after more than £750,000 of investment, it is set to open.
The bar will employ 36 staff with a team of four to five management staff.
Durham-based Newgate Pubs and Bars was granted a permit to operate between 9am and 1:30am last year and will be open for service between 10am and 1am.
The Stray Ferret spoke to Joe Smith, co-director of Newgate Pubs and Bars, who explained why Harrogate has been chosen as the site for this new bar.
He said:
I think it will sit nicely on the high street. There is a good local bar scene in Harrogate, but we think there is a real opportunity to bring something a little bit different.
We don’t think we’ll impede on other bars because of this difference. It’s a tough time for trade currently with the increase in National Insurance payments. We’re not here to steal anybody’s business, we just want to add an extra attraction to the town.
Our primary objective is to make people smile.

The bar, which has two stories, will offer a wide range of entertainment for its customers.
The “man-cave” area has two pool tables, a darts board and various arcade games.
The bar will also show live sports on 22 different television screens. There will be an outside seating area for the summer.

Mr Smith told the Stray Ferret that they were taking their food very seriously, and that they had invested £175,000 on their kitchen.
The drinks menu includes cocktails, wine, lagers and craft beers. A Guinness machine that lets you print your own photos on the foam will be introduced, which Mr Smith said was very popular in the company's Newcastle bar.
The company has grown significantly since it was set up 5 years ago, and Mr Smith said that they will be looking to open one or two more bars across the country per year for the next few years.
