A man has been jailed for a string of thefts in Harrogate and Ripon.

James Gilroy, whose address was given as HMP Hull, pleaded guilty to six charges of theft from a shop at York Magistrates Court yesterday (April 15).

According to court documents, Gilroy stole £333.94 worth of stock from TK Maxx in Harrogate on February 17.

It took place amid a spate of offences at supermarket Booths in Ripon.

On January 8, Gilroy stole alcohol to the value of £576 from the Marshall Way store.

He returned on January 17 and stole £729.50 worth of alcohol, and again on February 15, when he stole alcohol totalling £349.50.

The 29-year-old defendant stole alcohol to the value of £625.75 on February 22, and £974.75 worth of items on March 3.

The value of the stolen goods amounted to £3,589.44.

The magistrates sentenced Gilroy to a total of 12 months in custody.

Court documents say the offences are so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified, adding the defendant has a “flagrant disregard” for people and their property.

Gilroy also has a “very poor history of similar offending”, the documents added.
