Three new podcasts, or Straycasts as we call them, have been published - all focus on our local tour guides. In the Straycasts with Phil Airey of Horticap and Tamsin O'Brien, the Stray Ferret's founder, talk to three tour guides - one well established, one new to the role and one who adds a whole lot of drama to the experience!
Harry Satloka who runs the free walking tours in Harrogate talks about his latest venture with his financé, Rebecca, that promotes the history of women in the town. He also talks about how he began doing tours and his love of all things Harrogate.
Jill Cutter is a newly qualified Knaresborough tour guide. The town has just trained a team of volunteers to learn all about the history of the town and start to host walks for locals and tourists alike. Knaresborough has a long, and at times, bloody past that not many people know about.
In the podcast she tells Phil and Tamsin that the town needs to promote itself more:
We're a group of happy people.. and we are volunteers. We're going to tell people a little bit about our history. We go right back to the Stone Age and prior to that... I think it [Knaresborough] has been an ignored jewel for many years.
David Ault takes on a dramatic persona for his tours when the takes a brave group on the Ripon Ghost Walks. Spooky stories get mixed up with historic facts as he takes his tour to some of the darker places in the city. David exudes enthusiasm for his gruesome role and, in the podcast, tells a story that will make your spine tingle.
He tells Phil and Tamsin that he's always had a taste for the dramatic:
I dress up in a black policeman's coat, black trousers and a big black cape... the cape always looks good as I am walking down the street I can extend it...
At the heart of everything I always like to say is that imagination is the most important thing that anyone can have in this world...Everyone loves story telling. There is something magic about saying 'Once Upon A Time"..
