Bins were left overflowing outside a Harrogate shop for several days because they were "too heavy" to collect, according to the company responsible for them.
Local resident Debbie Dilasser approached the Stray Ferret with concerns over the state of the bins and waste strewn across the pavement near the Morrisons Daily store on King Edward’s Drive in Bilton.
Ms Dilasser said on Friday (October 17) she had complained to staff at the store three times about ripped bin bags and food waste on the ground.
In a social media post, she urged fellow residents to "join me in complaining" about the bin area.
She added:
It’s never been the tidiest of stores but right now bins are overflowing, bags are split and there’s food waste attracting rats.
Ms Dilasser told the Stray Ferret Morrisons Daily staff said they had been "having issues" with the firm responsible for waste management at the site, Veolia.
A staff member at the store contacted Ms Dilasser over the weekend and promised the waste would be cleared yesterday (October 20), but this did not materialise.
The Stray Ferret put Ms Dilasser's concerns to the Veolia, and asked why the waste had not been collected and when it would be cleared. Finally today, the matter was resolved.
A Veolia spokesperson said:
We have been to collect from the store in Harrogate, but unfortunately the bins are too heavy to move with our standard service.
We have ordered a site clearance for today (October 21), which will clear all the rubbish, and will monitor the service with our customer to ensure the bins are collected regularly to avoid overfilling or overflowing.
The Stray Ferret also approached Morrisons for comment. In a brief statement, a spokesperson this afternoon said:
The waste has now been collected, and the area has been swept and cleared.
The waste appeared to have been cleared when the Stray Ferret visited the site today (October 21).
When the Stray Ferret visited the site today, photos showed the mess indeed had been removed (pictured above).
