North Yorkshire Police has pledged to "intensify" efforts to tackle knife crime this week.

Officers say they will step-up patrols and search more suspects as part of Operation Sceptre.

They will also undertake special operations to target people with weapons and those involved in organised crime, as well as visit schools.

A statement by the force today (November 17) said:

Despite North Yorkshire having some of the lowest knife crime rates in the country, we regularly take knives off our streets and arrest people who carry them.

This week we're intensifying those efforts, with even more stop-and-searches and targeted patrols.

We've made dozens of arrests specifically for knife offences under this operation in the past, so we're confident this week will make an impact.

The Stray Ferret reported in June that 22 people had been arrested in 24 hours as part of Operation Tornado, which targeted knife crime, drugs, theft and immigration offences.

This week's action will see more officers deployed to knife crime hotspots.

Knife amnesty bins, where knives can be deposited, are available at Morrisons car park in Boroughbridge, Dragon Road in Harrogate, Fisher Street Car Park in Knaresborough, St Marygate Car Park in Ripon, as well as elsewhere in the county.

Police said today additional temporary knife amnesty bins have also been set up at police stations in York, Scarborough, Malton, Northallerton, Harrogate and Skipton until Sunday, so people can surrender blades with no questions asked.
