Harrogate farm applies to expand visitor sheep experiences
Plans have been submitted to expand the Blooming Sheep business at High Snape Farm in Kirkby Overblow, near Harrogate.
The application has been lodged on behalf of the farm’s owners, Chris and Claire Douthwaite, by Hardcastle Rural Surveyors Ltd.
The plan seeks to construct a new timber-framed building to support the business in its venture to become a succesful tourism and events venue.
Current site and business
Blooming Sheep is home to a flock of 30 Valais Blacknose sheep.
The site offers experiences ranging from glamping to afternoon tea while interacting with the sheep.
According to a planning statement, demand for these experiences has been strong, with four afternoon tea sittings per day during the 2025 season regularly being fully booked.
Until now, the business has employed 16 locally sourced staff and has developed links with local schools, care homes and nearby suppliers such as Harrogate’s Mama Doreen’s.
Proposed expansion
The application seeks permission for a new timber-clad building to provide a larger food preparation space, as well as indoor seating for up to five picnic tables during poor weather.
Outside the events season, the new building would be used for agricultural storage, livestock handling and short-term lambing accommodation.
In the planning statement, Hardcastle Rural Surveyors Ltd said:
With an increased demand behind them, the family would like to expand the Blooming Sheep business and increase the number of experiences that they offer as well as offer more sittings for existing and popular events such as the afternoon tea experience. To facilitate this, Chris and Claire will be looking to employ more locally sourced staff.
A decision on the proposal is expected to be made by April 13.
