The Harrogate railway line running between Leeds and York may be used by more passengers over the festive period.
This is because no trains will run between Leeds and York on the Church Fenton line between Christmas and January 2, due to work to upgrade the network.
As a result, passengers who generally use the Church Fenton line may opt to use the Harrogate one instead.
Network Rail is urging passengers to start planning their travel now and booking ahead to avoid any problems.
Network Rail’s chief network operator, Helen Hamlin, said:
The period between Christmas and New Year is the quietest on the railway and it’s the best time for us to do the major projects that will take longer.
We have some very big plans for improving the railway that will mean people may have to travel home on different routes after Christmas than the way they travelled out.
The work will be to improve signalling and track and power supply.
For those concerned, Daniel Mann, director of industry operations at rail delivery group, said:
You can use national rail enquiries and journey planners to check for updates, and our visual disruption maps – short videos designed to help people understand service changes and make informed travel decisions – will be available in stations and online.
We kindly remind our customers to remember to treat our railway colleagues with respect during this busy time. We also ask you to allow extra time for journeys between Christmas and New Year.
Other lines that may be affected during this period are between Preston and Carlisle, as well as around Cambridge, London Victoria, and London Waterloo.
