Readers’ Letters is a free weekly column giving you the chance to have your say on issues affecting the Harrogate district. It is an opinion column and does not reflect the views of the Stray Ferret. Send your views to letters@thestrayferret.co.uk.
This letter is in response to our article about Harrogate’s tempietto being demolished.
As a council officer involved at the time in the development of Victoria Gardens and the adjacent landscaping, I am sure that with the proper consultation North Yorkshire Council could find a new, permanent home for the tempietto.
People will have their views on the structure, along with the surrounding area (and even the actual development) but from my observations, the tempietto still has many years of life left in it. Careful cleaning and removal/rebuilding shouldn't be too much to ask.
Bernard White, Ripon
I have zero confidence that North Yorkshire Council will implement the lane rental scheme in a timely manner nor manage it effectively.
Furthermore it seems that the council deem themselves immune from the purpose of the scheme and are happy to conduct routine works on major routes for significant periods.
One current example is Skipton Road by the Curious Cow. Here some drainage work is on going in gulley which is scheduled for five weeks. This is while there is ongoing roadworks which they approved on Oaker Bank, Lund Lane and Chain Bar Lane. The work caused major congestion as one (except the council of course) could have predicted. Then some emergency works appeared on Ripon Road near to Grainbeck Lane and rather than pause they continued leading to congestion that have never been seen before.
It seems they are not practicing what they preach and should be held to account. It cannot be right the main roads have congestion reduced at busy times just for North Yorkshire Council to then occupy and take significant lengths of time to complete remedial works.
