This is the latest in a regular series of Business Q&A features published weekly. This week, we spoke to Paul Kendall, owner of Kendall's Farm Butchers in Pateley Bridge and Harrogate.
Tell us in fewer than 30 words what your firm does.
We're a fourth-generation family butcher's that sources and sells local meat, as well as award-winning pies and meal ideas. Everything we sell from our two shops and online is from Yorkshire.
What does it take to be successful in business?
Dedication. You need to love it.
You also need a fantastic team around you who give the best possible customer service.
Good value is another. I like to price everything quite keenly. We buy everything straight from market – in Pateley, Skipton, Otley and Northallerton – and I like to think you leave our shop having spent £20, £30 or £50, thinking 'That's not bad'.

What drives you to do what you do every day?
I'm the third generation to work in the business – I've worked with my dad and my grandad, and my wife Helen and our children Francesca and Noah all work in the business, as well as my sister Adele and my brother-in-law's brother-in-law!
I suppose really I just want to succeed – there's no doubt about it. I've worked in the business since I was 12 years old and I get a buzz out of it. It's got a fantastic team, the best customers and a great vibe. There's zero stress and a 'yes' attitude. I'm addicted to it.
Paul's daughter Francesca works in the business, as do her mother Helen and brother Noah.
What’s been the toughest issue your business has had to deal with over the last 12 months?
The rise in costs. It doesn't matter who it is, everybody's wanting more: National Insurance, corporation tax, council tax, the cost of produce. Food is a necessity, and everything wants it as cheaply as they possibly can. But it could be worse.
Which other local firms do you most admire and why?
Bettys. When you go there, it's always a bit expensive, but the food, the coffee, the service and the location are all fantastic. I always come out thinking 'That's how it should be done'. And I like the way they look after their staff. I've got a lot of repsect for Bettys – it's a very well run company, and they've helped to put Harrogate on the map.

Who are the most inspiring local leaders?
Sir Gareth Southgate [who lives near Blubberhouses]. He did really well as England's football manager, and kept it real.
What could be done locally to boost business?
Improve parking. Anyone who comes to Pateley Bridge has to find somewhere to park and then pay for it. Free parking for the first 30 minutes could do the town a lot of good.
This belted Galloway beef was sourced from Greenhow Hill, just five minutes from Kendall's Pateley Bridge shop.
Best and worst things about running a business from Pateley Bridge?
The best thing is the vibe – it's always good in Pateley Bridge.
There isn't a worst thing – it's awesome here. If you live in Pateley Bridge, you don't need to go on holiday. I mean, what more can you want?
What are your business plans for the future?
More of the same. We've taken a unit down in Dacre so that we can expand the space where the work gets done, and keep the shop tidier. I was inspired to do it by Yorkshire Flapjack, which is another Nidderdale family firm that's doing really well. They're inspirational.
We're also hoping to have quite a major refit of both shops, starting with the Pateley one, perhaps next summer. I want to have the world's best pie shop!
Kendall's makes and sells award-winning pies.
What do you like to do in your time off?
I like nothing better than sharing a bottle of wine with my wife. I also like playing golf with my son and seeing my daughter riding her horse at various events.
We've got three dogs too, so I like taking them for walks.
The Pateley Bridge shop is open from 7am till 5pm on weekdays and till 4pm on Saturdays.
Best places to eat and drink locally?
I can't say, because so many pubs and restaurants are our customers, so I can't pick the best one. I enjoy spending time with all of them!
