Harrogate train station

An event due to be held at Harrogate train station tomorrow has been postponed following a stabbing on an LNER train in Cambridgeshire on Saturday (November 1).

Rail industry representatives were due to hold a pop-up event at the station from 7am until 7pm tomorrow to make travellers aware of upcoming changes to the East Coast Main Line timetable.

But LNER today told the Stray Ferret the event has been postponed following the mass stabbing on a train from Doncaster to London King’s Cross on Saturday evening.

A spokesperson for the rail operator said:

We have taken the decision to postpone the roadshow tomorrow in light of the incident at the weekend as our colleagues work hard to keep customers on the move. We will look to do the roadshow on another date and we will send an update on this when we have one.

The timetable shake-up, which comes into play on December 14, affects all rail operators that run services along the east coast.

LNER previously said the timetable changes were estimated to save the rail industry £60 million a year, which would be used to “further enhance” rail services.

The changes mean direct services between Harrogate and London King’s Cross will be up to 10 minutes shorter.

Northern will also introduce an extra service between Harrogate and Leeds, meaning there will be five departures from Leeds to Harrogate between 5pm and 6pm.

The Stray Ferret has provided a breakdown of the timetable changes below.

Weekdays

The first and last services between Harrogate and London King's Cross in both directions will depart around an hour earlier from Monday to Saturday.

As part of the new LNER timetable, the first direct train from Harrogate to London King’s Cross will depart at 6.35am, arriving in London at 9.30am.

This is just under an hour earlier than the existing first train, which leaves Harrogate at 7.37am.

The first train southbound train from London King’s Cross to Harrogate will depart at 6.40am and arrive at 9.29am. The first train northbound is currently at 7.33am.

But the existing last train back to Harrogate, which currently departs London King’s Cross at 5.33pm, will be scrapped. Instead, people will have to board the 4.39pm to travel to Harrogate.

The final train from Harrogate to London King’s Cross will depart an hour later, but this will not be introduced until next spring. The last train currently leaves at 5.36pm, but those travelling to London will be able to leave Harrogate at 6.33pm.

Weekends

On Saturdays, the first train from London King’s Cross will depart at 6.40am and arrive in Harrogate at 9.29am. The first train currently leaves at 7.37am –

The first train travelling southbound will leave Harrogate at 6.35am and arrive in London at 9.30am.

According to East Coast Main Line, Sunday services will call at fewer stations between Doncaster and London and be up to 20 minutes quicker as a result. Trains will run every two hours but there will be one fewer train in each direction.

The first train to depart London King’s Cross on Sundays will be at 8.36am – arriving in Harrogate at 11.29am – whilst the first southbound train will leave Harrogate at 10.35am.

Currently, the first train leaves Harrogate at 9.15am on a Sunday.

East Coast Main Line said Northern services to Harrogate will not change much on Sundays, but there will be an earlier service from York to Knaresborough, as well as later trains to-and-from York.

Peterborough man Anthony Williams, 32, has this morning been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder, one count of actual bodily harm and one count of possession of a bladed article in connection to the incident at Huntingdon.

British Transport Police said he has also been accused of a separate offence of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article in connection an incident at Pontoon Dock DLR station on the same day.
