A Harrogate golfer is preparing for the game of his life.
Ollie White, who represents Pannal Golf Club, will play in the final qualifying round for The 153rd Open on Tuesday (July 1).
The 36-hole event will take place at West Lancashire Golf Club, one of England’s oldest courses.
The links-style course is 6,959 yards in total and has a par of 72.
White will start his first round at 7.10am, and his second at 12.55pm.
The professional golfer qualified for the final round through the regional qualifiers, at York’s Fulford Golf Club. He placed joint fourth, with a one-under-par score of 71.
White has competed in PGA events such as The Yorkshire Open, but never in a major event as prestigious as The Open.
In an exclusive interview with the Stray Ferret, White told us how he felt about the occasion:
There’s a lot on the line. If you do get through, it could be pretty big. It’s such a dogfight in final qualifying because you’ve got 72 players and only five spots. And you’re not playing against people who don’t know how to play golf!
I’m looking forward to it. I feel comfortable at West Lancashire. They make it so enjoyable to play there because they’ve got everything laid out and it runs so smoothly.
The prospect is good but you can’t get carried away with it. Two rounds in one day, it’s a lot of golf. You’ve just got to focus on it shot by shot, trust in all the practice you’ve done and hope that it comes together on the day.
