Harrogate’s very own professional golfer will take part in one of the four major men’s golf championships next week.
John Parry, who is ranked 108th in the world, will compete alongside the game's elite, including Masters champion Rory McIlroy, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Parry, 38, has had a remarkable season after returning to the DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour.
He tied for second at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa before winning his second DP World Tour title, 14 years on from his first, at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open. That success earned him £365,000.
The field for the PGA Championships was announced on Tuesday (May 6).
Reigning champion, Xander Schauffele, and world number one, Scottie Scheffler, will be among those taking on the 71-par course.
The Wanamaker Trophy, which has been awarded to every winner of the PGA Championship since 1916, is inscribed with names such as McIlroy, Woods and Mickelson.
The competition is one of the four most prestigious men’s golf championships in the world, along with the Masters, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship.
Parry reached a career best in February when he was ranked 91st in the world.
When the Stray Ferret spoke to Parry late last year, he had just returned home from his winning streak on the Challenger Tour, which promoted him to the DP Tour.
As he told us, it hasn’t been plain sailing — he has twice been demoted from the top tour.
He told us he loves the pressure that comes with playing professional golf, which bodes well for next week’s competition.
The PGA Championship will take place from May 15 to May 18.
