Two women will climb Snowdon to raise money for a Harrogate shopkeeper affected by the Tesco roadworks.
Betty Tomity and Klaudia Kemeny will climb the 3,560-foot mountain on September 20 in support of Claire Lewis, owner of Number One Shop on Electric Avenue.
They say the shop is a "friendly and reliable part of the community", and they want to give the owner a "much-needed boost".
Ms Tomity and Ms Kemeny have set a target of raising £800 on their GoFundMe page, which you can find here. They have currently raised £115.
Ms Lewis told the Stray Ferret she was very grateful:
They’re so sweet. I’ve known them a long time as customers, and they always come in to support me. They’re a lovely couple.
The Stray Ferret reported last week Ms Lewis' shop had been affected by the Tesco roadworks. With access being blocked from the A59, she told us that she was forced to forgo her salary in August to keep the business afloat.
It has not got any easier for her in the week since. Ms Lewis told the Stray Ferret today:
We’re on day 17 now, and trade is getting worse. Schools have all gone back now, meaning the traffic is much worse. I’ve had to make my own signs and put them at the top of the road to let people know I’m still open.
Tom Gordon, the Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough yesterday said “serious mismanagement” of the roadworks is disturbing the lives of local residents.
Mr Gordon and Councillor Monika Slater, a Lib Dem who represents the area on North Yorkshire Council, will visit the Tesco roadworks area on Saturday (September 6) to listen to concerns.
Ms Lewis said she was grateful for Mr Gordon’s intervention:
It means a lot because it’s a voice that’s bigger than mine. He’s coming down on Saturday to speak with us.
