The owner of an exotic pet rescue centre is calling on people in Knaresborough get in contact if they spot any one of a number of escaped snakes at large in the town.
It is not clear how many snakes are on the loose, but it is believed they escaped about a month ago from their home in the Chain Lane area.
One – a corn snake – has been found dead on the road outside Nippers children’s nursery on Wetherby Road.
Another – a milk snake – has been spotted slithering down someone’s drive on Stockwell Lane, frightening the homeowner, but has not yet been tracked down.
Dan Holmes of Knaresborough Exotic Rescue contacted the Stray Ferret to alert us to the roving reptiles, and ask us to put out the appeal.
He stressed that all the snakes are harmless.
He said:
It’s worrying, because one’s already been run over and we don’t want any more to die.
People are worried that the snakes will come into their homes, but in this weather, they’re more likely to stay outside and bask in the sunshine to warm up.
If people spot one of them, we’re asking them to put a bucket over it until we can get there and take it away. Or, if you don’t want to get close, at least keep an eye on it so we know where it is.
The corn snake is indigenous to North America and is not dangerous.
The milk snake is also harmless but resembles the highly venomous coral snake. Both come from South America.
Anyone who spots one of the escaped snakes should contact Dan Holmes on 01423 867141.
