A Knaresborough boxer has claimed gold at a national youth championships in Rotherham.

Seventeen-year-old Eddie 'The Hammer' Large, from Scotton, punched his way to victory at the England Boxing National Youth Championships yesterday (February 8).

Large, who was a bronze medallist in last year’s under-75kg event, took it two steps further in this year’s under-80kg final to win the main prize.

Representing Harrogate’s H Hour Boxing Gym, Large staged a decisive points victory to claim the title.

Known locally by his nickname 'The Hammer', his aggressive but disciplined style has become a trademark of his success.

Large’s success can be attributed to his determination in and out of the ring – regular 10-kilometre runs and training sessions with the H Hour coaches gave him the tools to win.

Large’s parents, Keith and Emma, said in a statement:

What a journey. From early morning runs to standing on top of a national podium with a gold medal — we couldn’t be prouder. But we know he’s still hungry for more.

Large’s parents also thanked the coaches at H Hour Boxing, saying his performance was a testament to the environment they have created at their gym.

Large will step back in the ring this weekend in Leeds, where he will compete for the Yorkshire under-80kg belt.

In March, he will take his talents onto the international stage when he represents his club at the Porto Box Cup in Portugal, competing for an international medal against top youth fighters from across Europe.
