Public toilets in Knaresborough have been upgraded in the run-up to this weekend’s big Christmas weekend.
Visitors and residents in Knaresborough will benefit from improved public conveniences thanks to a joint initiative by North Yorkshire Council and local councillors.
The first phase of the project has seen baby changing units added to the men’s and women’s toilets at Conyngham Hall; a baby changing unit added in the disabled toilet at Knaresborough Castle; and hooks for changing bags installed for added convenience.
There are also plans to improve the lighting at Conyngham Hall entrances to enhance safety and comfort.
Knaresborough’s North Yorkshire councillors Matt Walker and Hannah Gostlow funded the project through their locality budgets. Each of the 90 North Yorkshire councillors receive £5,000 annually to spend on community initiatives.
The toilet initiative was sparked by feedback from a local resident who highlighted the lack of suitable facilities while caring for their grandchild. The issue was also raised on a local independent podcast, where a shop owner identified a need across the town.
Cllr Gostlow said:
“Baby changing facilities are a priority for us. These improvements will make a real difference for families visiting our town during the festive season.”

Cllr Walker said:
“We’re delighted to see these upgrades completed before Christmas. It’s a great example of how locality funding can improve everyday amenities for residents and visitors.”
The two councillors said they will continue working with North Yorkshire Council, Knaresborough Town Council, and local community groups on further toilet improvements.
Knaresborough’s two-day Christmas market is the highlight of a host of community events this weekend.
