Lidl applies for 7am Sunday deliveries in Knaresborough

Lidl in Knaresborough.

Lidl GB has applied for planning permission to allow deliveries as early as 7am on Sundays at its store in Knaresborough.

The German supermarket has operated at the site of the former Co-op on Chain Lane since 2018.

Lorries are currently permitted to deliver from 9am to 5pm on Sundays.

But the company says the hours are “adversely affecting its ability to operate the store efficiently” and has applied to North Yorkshire Council to extend the Sunday hours from 7am until 8pm.

The Monday to Saturday delivery times of 8am to 9pm are unaffected.

A planning statement by the supermarket says:

Due to the popularity of the store, Lidl has found that the current restrictions on delivery hours on Sundays are adversely affecting its ability to operate the store efficiently. These operational challenges have been further exacerbated by wider logistical constraints experienced by the company across the Yorkshire region, where similar delivery restrictions apply at a number of food stores.

Ensuring that the store can be adequately stocked through regular and reliable deliveries is essential to maintaining the viability of the operation. The proposed extension to delivery hours will provide the necessary operational flexibility to ensure the continued successful operation of the store, thereby maintaining the important retail service it provides to the local community.

The line shows where the acoustic fence would go.

Lidl has offered to build a two-metre acoustic fence on the north-east site boundary to protect nearby residents from noise.

A noise impact assessment, conducted by Acoustic Consultants Ltd on behalf of Lidl, says “no adverse impacts on residential amenity would arise” because of the plans.

According to Lidl’s planning statement, deliveries can last up to an hour.

Articulated lorries with refrigerated units arrive via the Chain Lane entrance and reverse into a delivery bay at the north of the site.

The goods, which are usually on pallets, are moved into the store on trucks.

Most stores have two or three deliveries a day.
