Every Monday, the Stray Ferret publishes a round-up of sports action in the Harrogate district, focusing on the first team results of local amateur and semi-professional sports clubs. Here's what happened during the week of November 24 to 30.
Harrogate Rugby Club experienced more late drama on Saturday when they scored a last-minute try to beat Kendal and move into second place. Losing 17-20 down, captain Sam Brady powered over the line to make the score 22-20. Harrogate’s four tries earned them all five league points and saw them leapfrog Ilkley. The gap with league leaders Heath is down to seven points.
Harlow Hill FC continued their fine run of form on Saturday, beating Rawdon Old Boys 6-1 to maintain their 14-point lead at the top of the West Yorkshire Association Football League Division One. Two goals apiece for James Buchanan and Scott Johnson took the strikers’ season tallies to 13 and 12 goals, respectively. Harlow Hill have won their last 12 matches in all competitions.
Harrogate Town Women had a player sent off as they fell victim to an Alnwick Town Juniors comeback on Sunday. After Town went 1-0 up in two minutes, Alnwick scored five times in 40 minutes. Lauren Doyle was sent off at 2-1 and the match finished 5-2.
Unstoppable Ripon Rockets won their ninth straight game in the NYNAL Senior Winter League Division One on Wednesday. The 53-37 defeat of Diamonds means the Rockets have now beaten every team in the league and are 10 points clear at the top of the table.
Knaresborough Town Women maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 win over Forge Way on Sunday. The Boro’ lacked match sharpness after having games postponed for four weeks but still prevailed. If they win their two games in hand over league leaders Thackley, Knaresborough could go one point ahead of them.
