The deadline to register to vote at the general election on July 4 is 11.59pm tonight (Tuesday June 18).

Voters can register online or by using a paper form. Anyone who is not registered will be ineligible to vote.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote is Wednesday, June 19.

If someone is unable to vote in person or by post they have until 5pm on Wednesday, June 26, to apply for a proxy vote.

Who can register?

To register to vote you must be aged 16 or over and a British citizen or Irish citizen. You can also register if you have permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man.

You may not actually vote until you are 18 years old.

How do I register to vote?

The registration process to vote online takes about five minutes.

You will need your National Insurance number (although you can still register if you do not have one).

First, click here to access the registration page.

To begin the process, scroll down and click the green Start Now button. If you wish to register by post, then click that option below the green button.

Next, you will be asked which country you live in and what your nationality is. Click the green Continue button to progress each time.

After that, you will need to input your date of birth and your full name, followed by your National Insurance number and address.

Continue through the last few questions about your address and contact details until the final green button says, ‘I accept – send my application’. This means you have reached the end of registration and are eligible to vote in the general election in July.

Do I need to register to vote?

You must register to vote to be able to vote in the general election.

Registering to vote puts you on the electoral register so that you can vote in elections or referendums and get on or off the open register.

Generally, voters only need to register to vote once.

For more advice on registering to vote click here or contact the local Election Registration Office.
