Special kits designed to stem bleeding in emergencies have been installed around the Harrogate district.
The 45 Daniel Baird Foundation bleed kits rolled out across North Yorkshire – including in Harrogate, Ripon and Roecliffe – include specialised first-aid equipment to help control potentially fatal bleeding before emergency services arrive.
The foundation was set up after 26-year-old Daniel Baird was fatally stabbed on a night out in Birmingham in 2017. It now aims to ensure bleeding control packs are publicly accessible and works with local organisations to install as many bleed kits as possible nationwide.
The £20,000 scheme, which has been funded by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Community Safety, Serious Violence and Community Fund, has been delivered by North Yorkshire Council’s community safety hub, North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Ambulance Service and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Kits can be accessed by calling 999, when an operator will give the caller a code to open the box, like a safe.
A full list of local bleed kit locations can be found below.

Daniel Baird
The council’s executive member for corporate services, Cllr Heather Phillips, said:
Bleed kits are a simple but powerful way to protect our communities.
While they are important in urban areas, in rural parts of North Yorkshire, where emergency response times can be longer, having these kits available can quite literally save lives.
They give local people the tools to act quickly and confidently in a crisis, strengthening our community’s resilience and offering real peace of mind.

Dr Lynne Baird MBE
Dr Lynne Baird, Daniel’s mother, also welcomed the North Yorkshire rollout:
This is another wonderful example of organisations coming together to do more for community safety and resilience.
I’m delighted many more people across North Yorkshire will be able to access the emergency bleed control kits from the public cabinets should they be faced with a catastrophic bleeding injury.
Jo Coles, York and North Yorkshire’s deputy mayor for policing, fire and crime added:
Emergency services in York and North Yorkshire respond as quickly as they can, but having specialist equipment already at the scene of an incident can be lifesaving, especially in our rural communities.
