Another Ripon city councillor is to step down amid ongoing political turbulence.
Councillor Sid Hawke confirmed to the Stray Ferret today (October 17) that he intends to tender his resignation on Monday. He said he would elaborate on his reasons when he had formally resigned.
A former firefighter who was born and bred in Ripon, Cllr Hawke is one of Ripon’s most prominent local politicians this century.
He has been a member of Ripon City Council for 23 years and served four terms as mayor. He was also a Harrogate borough councillor for 26 years.
Cllr Hawke has been absent for recent meetings, which have seen former mayor Cllr Jackie Crozier resign, new mayor Cllr Barbara Brodigan face a public vote of no confidence, the leader and deputy leader roles abolished, staff departures, two new committees created and the staffing committee dissolved.
Cllr Hawke represents Ure Bank ward, where a by-election is already due to be held on November 20 following the resignation of Cllr Jo Bate, who also represented the ward.
