Heavy morning rain did not bode well for Ripon’s big Christmas lights switch on, but as the day improved hundreds of residents and visitors turned out to usher in another festive season in the ancient city.
At midday, Market Square was virtually empty, apart from a handful of wind-swept pigeons.
But by 3pm the number of families who brought children to meet the reindeer, see Santa in his Cabmen’s Shelter grotto and ride one of the galloping horses, had steadily grown.

By the evening, the square was packed
Councillor Jackie Crozier, who was present throughout the day, alongside event compere. Cllr Andrew Williams, told the Stray Ferret:
It didn’t look too promising first thing, but Riponians are made of sturdy stuff and wouldn’t let rain spoil the party atmosphere,
Cllr Williams added:
For our independent retailers and hospitality businesses, Christmas is a crucial trading period and we hope that the extended and enhanced decorations for 2025 will attract the festive footfall that they rely on.

Children were able to ride on the galloping horses attraction up until 6pm.

There were huge cheers when Santa (aka four-times Mayor of Ripon Cllr Sid Hawke) switched on the Christmas lights with the assistance of Hannah from Jennyruth Workshops
