Harrogate Railway thrash team three tiers above them in the cup

Every Monday, the Stray Ferret publishes a round-up of sports action in the Harrogate district. We will focus on the first team results of local amateur and semi-professional sports clubs. Here's what happened during the week of October 27 to November 2.

Men's Football

Harrogate Railway

The Rail progressed to the next round of the County Cup with a 5-1 win over Guiseley on Tuesday and edged past Goole with a 2-1 win in the league on Saturday. Goals from Alex Ingham x2, Harris Eggleston, Sam Drake and Alex Burton completed a sizeable cup upset over Guiseley, who are three tiers above Harrogate Railway in the football pyramid. Alex Ingham and Dom Creamer scored against Goole. Harrogate Railway remain third in the NCEL Division One, with 45 points from 18 games. Should they win their two games in hand, they will leapfrog Worsbrough Bridge and Dearne and District into first place.

Knaresborough Town

The Boro’ snatched a late equaliser to draw 1-1 at home with Wombwell Town on Saturday. Daniel Thirkell scored in the 90th minute to deny 19th-placed Wombwell all three points. Knaresborough remain 12th in the NCEL Premier Division, with 20 points from 18 games. They have extended their winless streak in the league to 10 games.

Ripon City

City progressed in the County Cup with an impressive 6-0 win over Featherstone Colliery’s first team. Adam Haswell, Joe Payette, Josh Underwood, Oliver Washbrook, Harry Washbrook and Zack Gallimore all got on the scoresheet for Ripon, who were 3-0 up at half-time.

Harlow Hill

Harlow Hill were awarded a bye to the next round of the County Cup as Allerton were unable to field a side on Saturday.

Boroughbridge AFC

Boroughbridge also progressed to the next round of the County Cup with a 3-0 victory over Springhead. Liam Spence x2 and Jack Heron scored for the Bridge, who were 2-0 up at half-time.

Women’s Football

Harrogate Town

Harrogate fell to a 4-0 defeat away at Spennymoor Town in the league on Sunday (November 2). Town drop to seventh in the Premier Division of the North East Regional Women’s League, with nine points from six games. Should they win their game in hand, they could move up to fourth.

Knaresborough Town

Knaresborough’s League Cup fixture against Eldwick Lionesses was postponed on Sunday.

Harrogate Railway

The Rail progressed to the next round of the League Cup with a 5-1 win away to Bradford City under-23s. Caitlyn Atkin, Georgia France, Jodi Hodgson, Freya Stark and Jess Cooke all got on the scoresheet for Railway.

Boroughbridge

Boroughbridge were dumped out of the League Cup by Harrogate Town’s under-23s squad on Sunday, losing 5-2 at home.

Rugby

Harrogate Rugby Club

Harrogate Rugby Club did not have a game last week.

Ripon Rugby Club

Ripon were awarded a home walkover in the Yorkshire Shield on Saturday as Acklam were unable to field a side.

Knaresborough Rugby Club

Knaresborough fell to a 46-14 defeat against Leeds Modernians in the league on Saturday. They now sit in fifth place in the Counties 4 Yorkshire North League, having picked up 11 points from their first seven games.

Harrogate Pythons

Harrogate Pythons were awarded an away walkover in the Yorkshire Shield on Saturday, as the home side, Old Rishworthian, were unable to field a team.

Men's Hockey

Harrogate Hockey Club

Harrogate fell to their third defeat of the season against Leeds’ second team on Saturday, losing 5-2 at home. Charles Edmondson and Justin Metcalfe scored for the home side. Harrogate have now dropped down to eighth place in the Yorkshire and North East Open Men’s Premier Division, having picked up 10 points from their first seven games.

Women’s Hockey

Harrogate Hockey Club

Harrogate’s women’s side also lost on Saturday in a 3-2 home defeat against Sheffield University Bankers. Emma Waud and Seren Melling got on the scoresheet for Harrogate. They continue to sit in last place in the Yorkshire and North East Women’s Premier Division, having won one and lost six. They have just three points from seven games.

Netball

There were no NYNAL Senior Winter League fixtures last week.
