James Campbell and Laura Davis

A couple who forged a reputation at the Malt Shovel in Brearton are to open a gastropub near Ripon.

Laura Davis and James Campbell managed the Malt Shovel from 2022 until this year.

They announced their departure from the 16th century pub in January, and a farewell party followed the following month.

Today (April 10) they revealed plans to run their own freehouse called The Furlong and Furrow close to Ripon Races.

The exact venue has yet to be revealed, but the pub is due to open mid-May.

Ms Davis said the couple would reveal all at the end of the month “but it is very close to the races”.

She added:

Between James and I we have 45 years’ experience in hospitality and we can't wait to bring exquisite food and warm home-for-home hospitality to Ripon.

We were nominated for hospitality awards last year in the Harrogate Hospitality and Tourism awards and we've won many travellers choice awards in the past.

We are really excited to get to know Ripon, build community partnerships and bring professional and unique hospitality in a personalised atmosphere, creating memorable experiences for the community and beyond.

The pub already has a website, which says it will be “a stunning and peaceful location nestled in the countryside” and an “independent freehouse offering fresh, gastro, seasonal dining using the highest quality and local ingredients and paired with a range of local real cask ales and fine wines”.

The couple are advertising for front of house and kitchen staff.
