Closing in on a fast time.

Ripon may be known for its racecourse, but two-legged runners were under starter’s orders today (February 17) for the city’s annual Pancake Day race.

Hundreds of people flocked to Kirkgate to witness the annual Shrove Tuesday fun.

Some hoped to win the coveted Golden Frying Pan, which is awarded to whoever races along Kirkgate while flipping a pancake fastest. For the first time ever this year, a flipping zone was created to ensure fair play.

Others were there to help children take part or just to soak up the sun and atmosphere.

The Rotary Club of Ripon Rowels organised the event, which Ripon Cathedral described as “a joyful mix of history, hilarity, and very competitive pancake flipping”.

Here is a video of the clergy team’s run, followed by a gallery of images from the day.
