Newly installed automatic number plate recognition cameras at two reservoirs near Harrogate have been stolen.

Yorkshire Water introduced the cameras as part of a new system of charging people to park at its reservoirs in January this year.

North Yorkshire Police's community messaging service said the car park ticket machines at Swinsty and signs were vandalised between 7pm on March 1 and 1am on March 2.

The Stray Ferret asked Yorkshire Water for further details. A spokesperson said:

"Unfortunately, ANPR cameras at Swinsty and Fewston have been stolen and the parking machines at the sites have been vandalised.
"We are working closely with the police and will be sharing any relevant information required for their investigation."

Visitors are still expected to pay. The spokesperson added:

"Payments will be taken via the phone line stated on the signage and the RingGo app while we work to repair the machines and install new cameras. Visitors have until midnight on the day of their visit to pay, so this can be done when they return home. We have put up signage at the sites to inform visitors."

The charges, introduced on January 22, are:

  • 1 hour – £1

  • 2 hours – £2

  • 6 hours – £3

  • All day – £5

  • Annual pass for all car parks – £30

Police urged anyone with information about the crimes to call 101, quoting ref NYP-02032024-0098.
