This morning's celebrations in York to mark Yorkshire Day.

Civic dignitaries met in York today for the annual Yorkshire Day celebration.

York hosted the first Yorkshire Day civic celebration in 1985. Since then, the council and mayor of different towns and cities around the county have hosted it.

Mayors were brought into the city on an electric bus to join a parade from York Mansion House to York Minster for a multi-faith celebration.

The celebrations are organised by the Yorkshire Society, a not-for-profit organisation formed in 1980 to promote Yorkshire.

Philip Bell, chief executive of the society, said:

From 2018, when the Yorkshire Society began to modernise itself, the event has evolved with the last four hosts, Ripon, Whitby, Keighley and Rotherham all adding additional localised touches to personalise the event, expand it into the community and encourage the participation of the general public.

Councillor Claire Douglas, Labour leader of City of York Council, said:

We’re delighted to be hosting Yorkshire Day here in the county’s traditional capital, and the opportunity to demonstrate the core commitments we have made as a city to the people of York.

Yorkshire Day in York gives us a great chance not only to highlight our equalities, affordability, climate and health principles, but to demonstrate how our civic roles and responsibilities evolve and modernise over time.
