Harrogate Magistrates Court.

CCTV captured the moment a man tried on sunglasses inside a car he’d just broken into, Harrogate Magistrates Court has been told.

Kai Suttill, 25, pleaded guilty to theft from a motor vehicle and theft of a pedal bike during a court hearing yesterday (April 30).

Peter Minnikin was defending Suttill, but he also put forward the Crown Prosecution Service’s case due to a technical issue.

Mr Minnikin told the court police were called to an address on Hawthorne Close in Markington at around 9pm on April 12 this year, after several people reported a car having been broken into outside a pub in the village.

Suttill had been staying at the address at the time and "reference to a man named Kai had been made" during reports to police.

When officers arrived, they found various items that were said to have been taken from inside a car, including sunglasses, keys and a bodywarmer - all of which belonged to a named man.

The court heard:

By Mr Suttill pleading guilty, he accepts breaking into the car.

As officers continued their search of the property, they found a £300 bike that had also been reported stolen from the home of another named man.

By admitting these offences, Suttill breached a conditional discharge.

Defendant is 'not without his difficulties'

Defending Suttill, Mr Minnikin said the defendant is “not without his difficulties”.

He told the court Suttill, who lives in the Bilton area of Harrogate, is waiting on council accommodation and is currently living between hotels.

Suttill had a very close bond with his grandparents, but following their deaths he “turned to drugs and alcohol” to deal with mental issues that came with the grief.

Mr Minnikin also said Suttill described himself as a “dickhead when I’m p*****”.

He added:

Mr Suttill was out and drunk that evening. He got in the car and could even be seen trying on the sunglasses inside the car on CCTV footage.

He also found the bike and rode it home.

Suttill has since referred himself to North Yorkshire Horizons – an addiction recovery service – and would like to go to rehab to address his substance misuse.

Mr Minnikin suggested the case be adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

The magistrates agreed and ordered Suttill return to Harrogate Magistrates Court for sentence on July 3.
