A man is in police cells today (April 29) after a high-speed pursuit from Harrogate to Ripon last night.
According to a North Yorkshire Police statement, officers received information just after 9.15pm last night that a suspected stolen vehicle from Harrogate had been spotted in the area.
A two-minute police video of the incident (see below) shows the vehicle turning right from Maltkiln Lane into Killinghall then through the village, across New Park roundabout, past the Royal Hall and along Station Parade.
The statement said:
The car was swiftly sighted by one of our roads policing units, but failed to stop, leading to a pursuit.
With support from our ‘eyes in the sky’ at the National Police Air Service, officers maintained the pursuit despite the driver’s attempts to get away.
It continued into Ripon, where a stinger was successfully deployed, bringing the vehicle to a stop. The driver made off on foot, but a 37-year-old man was detained a short time later.
He was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle; failing to stop; driving whilst disqualified; dangerous driving; theft; driving without insurance; and driving under the influence of drugs.
The man remains in custody for questioning.
