Ripon Museums has launched a new, family-friendly summer trail across all three of its museums, to coincide with the school holidays.
Running until September 2 across The Workhouse, Courthouse and Prison & Police Museum, the trail is included in the ticket admission – which grants annual access to all museums in the Trust.
Taking inspiration from the herbs found in The Workhouse’s Kitchen Garden, the summer trail is designed to bring history to life for visitors as they explore Victorian life in an interactive and engaging way.
It also showcases the produce grown in the garden, which is restored and maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers, to accurately reflect the herbs and plants available in the Victorian era.
Director of Museums Alexa Vernon commented:
We boast three museums in one city and the trail gives families the opportunities to learn about history whilst discussing important issues that are still very relevant today.
Families can come together for the day at the Workhouse, Kitchen Gardens, Courthouse and Prison & Police museums and enjoy time together.
Children can complete a set of six herb-related challenges across all three sites, which are within an easy walking distance of each other in Ripon.
It has been made possible through funding from Arts Council England and appeals to families looking for memorable, value days out in North Yorkshire.
The trail takes visitors to activity stations in the school room, pantry, gardens, prison cells, and courthouse, ensuring every inch of the museums can be explored.
They can make, craft and solve challenges whilst learning about history.
Other activities taking place during the school summer holidays include Thursday baking sessions, where children and adults can enjoy making and sampling some tasty traditional Victorian recipes, in The Workhouse kitchen.
There’s also plenty of opportunity to step back in time and fully embrace the past, with costumes, props, audio tours and more.
Chair of the Ripon Museum Trust Robert Ling added:
Our summer trail invites local and visiting families to the museums for fun, educational and thought-provoking activities offering a value day out.
We are looking forward to seeing many happy new faces this summer.
Ripon Museum Trust’s Summer Trail is taking place between July 20 – September 2.
Tickets (covering all three museums) start from £10.50 for children, £19 for adults and £18 for concessions.
