The Sun Colonnade can be very dark after twilight.

North Yorkshire Council has applied for listed building consent to install a new lighting scheme in the grade II listed Sun Colonnade in Harrogate's Valley Gardens.

The lighting would consist of 27 LED lamps and would be installed on the side wall, but only in the 200 metres of covered walkway structures – the colonnade itself – rather than in the adjoining Sun Pavilion.

The lights specified in the planning application are wall-mounted 9.2 Watt LED lamps – roughly the equivalent of 60 Watt bulbs – made by Manchester-based Whitecroft Lighting, and are designed to shed "zero upward light", minimising light pollution.

The Sun Colonnade and Pavilion were built in in 1933 as part of a £60,000 spa development scheme designed to be one of the finest in Europe.

The purpose of the colonnade was to maximise exposure to sunlight – the best source of vitamin D – in order to ease muscle pain, and according to its official Historic England listing, the structure as a whole represents the attraction of health-related travel before the introduction of the NHS in 1948.

There have been no objections to North Yorkshire Council's application for listed building consent, which will be considered at the next meeting of Harrogate Town Council's planning and regulatory committee on Wednesday (September 30).
