A plan to convert a Knaresborough auction house into flats has been withdrawn.

Wetherby-based ATK Building Solutions Ltd submitted an application to North Yorkshire Council to convert the former Thornton & Linley Auctioneers site on Jockey Lane in February.

Documents lodged to the council said the site had been used as the company's salesroom and office, but were now vacant.

The proposal sought to create three two-bedroom flats to complement the existing flat at the building.

It also planned to remove the existing outbuildings to the south of the site and rebuild a stone boundary wall.

Plans added that the external areas would also be re-surfaced and a timber portico would be put up at the ground floor entrance.

The building is considered to be in good condition and suitable for conversion, but the existing stone boundary wall to the south of the site is "leaning" and the external staircase is also in "poor condition".

In documents submitted to the authority, the developer said the plan would help to secure the building’s future use, preserve the existing character and appearance of the fabric, and enhance the doorway facing the High Street.

It added:

The ideal way of securing the future of historic buildings is to keep them in active use, but this will often necessitate some degree of adaptation. The alterations proposed are required to meet regulations and best practice for the proposed changes to residential use and ensure occupation of the building for the future in these changing times.

However, an update on the application on the council's planning portal said the proposal had been withdrawn.
