Plans have been submitted to improve a junction on the A61 to facilitate access to a solar farm in South Stainley.

Severn Trent Green Power Limited has tabled the proposal to North Yorkshire Council on land west of the A61 Ripon Road.

The move would also see an existing agricultural track off the A61 improved to provide a temporary secondary site access to Cayton Solar Farm, which was granted planning permission in January 2022.

According to the plans, improvements are required at the junction to help accommodate vehicles to use the agricultural track and create a priority T-junction.

The plans said that a “small number” of vehicles would require the new junction as the Water Lane access had a four-metre high bridge associated with the former railway.

The proposals added:

The junction and track is located a few hundred metres north of the Water Lane junction and would provide a safe and practical access solution for a temporary and limited period only, to support the delivery of the consented solar farm.

Planning documents added that the junction would be in place for “a limited period only” while the solar farm is constructed and that there would be “no adverse impacts on highway safety”.

North Yorkshire Council will make a decision on the plan at a later date.
