Harrogate’s newest fat loss group, affectionately known as ‘Chub Club’, has welcomed its first members.
Founder Michelle Slater, who describes the club as a “no-nonsense fat loss” group, opened Chub Club locations in Harrogate, Starbeck and Ilkley last week.
Ms Slater told the Stray Ferret her aim is to “teach nutritional information” and “educate members on calories” to help lose them fat.
The Stray Ferret asked Ms Slater what makes Chub Club different to groups like Slimming World. She said:
Chub Club is an independent community fat loss club. I am a qualified fat loss coach, who has experienced fat loss myself by following the fundamentals taught at the club.
It offers people the same benefits as one-to-one coaching and accountability through interaction by attending the group.
Slimming World works for some people, but not all. I offer nutritional information that allows members to choose the foods they like and still lose weight. There is no ‘syn or point’ system at Chub Club.
Ms Slater said she set up the group after “experimenting” with diet culture herself.
She told the Stray Ferret it took her a while to realise that “miracle diets don’t work”, which led her to delve into the nutrition industry further.
Now, she wants to "share the knowlegdge" she has gathered over her nine-year journey, which has led her to lose 44lbs, with others:
I’m an academic and a bit of a science nerd, so I started reading articles and scientific studies instead of magazines.
I soon saw through the charade that is sold to all of us by the diet industry, and began to understand the scientific, indisputable nature of losing fat: a calorie deficit.
That’s it - it's so simple. During my time as a one-to-one coach, I also worked on mindset techniques that I incorporate into my groups today.
Michelle Slater's own transformation.
Ms Slater, who is originally from Huddersfield but moved to Harrogate this year, said members can expect a “very warm welcome", adding the only criteria is to "just turn up".
The Stray Ferret also asked what Ms Slater would say to those that are hesitant to join the group:
You have absolutely nothing to lose. Come and decide for yourself.
Give yourself an hour out of your daily life to learn how to take care of you. You deserve to give yourself that at the very least.
The Harrogate sessions will take place every Thursday at Christ Church, from 1-2pm, and at Starbeck Methodist Church from 6-7pm on Wednesdays.
People can also attend sessions at All Saints Parish Church, in Ilkley, on Thursday evenings.
The first session is free but costs £6.95 per session thereafter.
