Norton Conyers in Ripon is a late medieval manor house that has been lived in by the Graham family for 11 generations since 1624, except for a 20-year period between 1862 and 1882.
It has a fascinating history; Charlotte Brontë stayed there, and it is believed that the character Bertha Mason from her novel Jane Eyre who was kept secretly locked in an attic apartment is inspired by an upper room of the house.
And this weekend the owners, Sir James and Lady Graham, who still live at the house, are opening their garden, all in aid of Saint Michael’s Hospice.
There will be homemade teas in the orangery and walled garden, lawn games and plant sales.
Free for children under 16, adults £6, 2-4.30pm, August 11, Norton Conyers, Wath near Ripon, HG4 5EQ.
