Learn about the birds that call Fountains Abbey home

This May half term it's all about birds and nature at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.

Visitors can head to the bird hide that's just two minutes from the visitor centre to explore and discover the different birds that live in the trees.

Henshaws, a northern charity supporting people living with sight loss and a range of other disabilities, has created papier-mâché versions that can be spotted in the deep green canopies, and visitors can use their spotter sheet to see what they can match.

Free, 10am-6.30pm, until June 1, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Ripon, HG4 3DY.

Go to the funfair

If you’ve not yet been to Harrogate’s Indoor Funfair, now’s the time to do it.

With jaw-dropping rides, there will also be all the classic fairground attractions, including dodgems, waltzer and bumper cars, as well as inflatables for all ages.

The family-friendly event makes for a fun day out, and you can grab a bite to eat, as there’s an on-site café too.

Online tickets from £14.99, on the door tickets £17 (subject to availability), until June 1, Yorkshire Event Centre, Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate, HG2 8NZ.

Explore a Neolithic site

The Thornborough Henges near Ripon are an ancient monument complex of three giant, circular earthworks that, despite stretching over a mile, are easy to miss if you don't know they're there.

The Northern Henge is open to the public and can be toured without a guide, but Friday's guided tour by English Heritage volunteers, is a great opportunity to discover the secrets of the South Henge.

Free but booking required, 11am, May 30, Thornborough Henges, New Lane, West Tanfield, DL8 2RD. Not suitable for wheelchairs, and there are no toilets on site.

Learn about the history of Nidderdale

Nidderdale Museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Visit to see its exhibits that are set out across 11 rooms and focus on rural life, with sections on agriculture, local industries, religion, transport and costume.

There are also displays that include re-creations of a Victorian schoolroom, a cobbler’s workshop, a 1930s hairdresser’s salon and a shop, among others. Watch the video above to get a flavour of what it's like.

Under 16s free, £5 per ticket for adults, 1.30pm-4.30pm, Tuesdays to Sundays, Nidderdale Museum, The Old Workhouse, King Street, Pateley Bridge, Harrogate, HG3 5LE.
