Yorkshire Water has started a £766,000 project to replace 2km of water mains in Marton-cum-Grafton, near Boroughbridge.
The contractor, OCU Group, will be replacing the mains on Limebar Lane, from the A168 to the junction with Grafton Lane. The work is expected to take about two months.
Yorkshire Water said replacing the mains would improve the reliability of the drinking water supply, reduce leakage, and prevent water main bursts. The utility is prioritising ageing pipework in areas prone to bursts and supply interruptions, and replacing them with durable plastic piping.
Victoria Corbett, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said:
We’re investing £406 million in upgrading our clean water mains network by 2030, in which we’ll be replacing 1,000km of pipework to enable us to deliver quality and reliable service to more of our customers.
We’re just over a year into the programme, and the project in Marton-cum-Grafton follows a number of other successful projects across North Yorkshire.
So far, the company has completed schemes in Grassington, Bedale, Settle, Sutton, Hauxwell to Hunton, and Thirn to Thornton.
Work to lay new water mains also recently started in Yedingham, and North Cowton and East Cowton.
Ms Corbett added:
We’ll be working quickly and doing everything that we can to keep disruption at a minimum whilst we deliver this important work.
The wider mains replacement programme forms part of Yorkshire Water’s £8.3 billion investment into improving infrastructure, customer experience, and its environmental impact.
