If you’re a North Yorkshire resident in search of somewhere new, or you're a visitor who's looking to turn a trip to Harrogate into something a little more indulgent – why not head to Champagne + Fromage this autumn and winter, where fine Champagne meets artisan cheese.

Nestled at 2 Royal Parade in the heart of the town centre, this elegant spot brings a touch of France to Yorkshire, celebrating the timeless art of pairing Champagne with handcrafted cheeses and charcuterie.

The concept is simple but inspired.

Champagne + Fromage believes that Champagne should not be reserved only for special occasions, but enjoyed like any other fine wine – especially alongside good food. Indeed, its philosophy is: 'Champagne is a wine and as such can be drunk anytime, by itself or with a meal. It’s the perfect pairing with cheese.' This ethos runs through the entire experience, from the carefully chosen grower Champagnes to the rustic boards of hand-selected French cheeses and charcuterie.

Inside, the bistro bar, which seats 36, feels effortlessly chic yet relaxed, blending Parisian charm with Harrogate’s genteel character. Think warm lighting, vintage décor, and an atmosphere that invites you to linger. It’s the sort of place that suits every mood: a leisurely lunch with friends, a romantic evening, or simply a quiet glass of fizz after a day’s work.

The team, headed up by Simon Moppett, has curated a drinks list that champions small, independent Champagne producers, offering guests the opportunity to discover bottles far beyond the famous names. Each is paired thoughtfully with complementary cheeses – creamy Bries, tangy blues, and nutty Comtés that bring out new dimensions in the bubbles.

The food menu continues the French inspiration, featuring rich cheese boards, rustic charcuterie platters, and occasional baked Camembert or seasonal specials. Everything is designed for sharing, encouraging conversation and connection. The staff are always on hand to give their advice, and are happy to suggest the perfect pairing or explain the story behind a lesser-known Champagne house.

Indeed, Simon is happy to indulge anyone who wishes to chat about champagne. It was he and his wife who stumbled upon Champagne + Fromage in London in 2012, which inspired him a year later to open Harrogate. He says:

I thought that it would only work up north in Harrogate or York, thanks to the discerning clientele.

He’s right: Harrogate’s thriving food and drink scene makes it an ideal home for such a concept. With beloved local institutions such as Hoxton North and Crema Café nearby – both of which Simon says have been “so supportive”, the town attracts both local and visiting foodies.

Champagne + Fromage adds something distinctive to the mix – it’s not just a restaurant, but a sensory experience that invites you to slow down and savour each flavour.

Champagne + Fromage is also lining up various events, from a Meet the Founder event with Maud Fierobe to visits from champagne houses such as Champagne le Gallais and Champagne Moutardier.

Whether you’re marking an occasion or simply treating yourself, this is a venue that makes any moment feel a little more glamorous. Though the owner is keen to remind guests that Champagne doesn’t need a reason – sometimes, the occasion is the experience itself.

Champagne + Fromage is open from 12 noon to 10pm Tuesday to Saturday, and from 12noon to 6pm on Sunday. 2 Royal Parade, Harrogate, HG1 2SZ. Visit the website to book.
