Boots has proposed a series of changes to the outside of its building in Harrogate town centre.
The Nottingham-based retailer has applied for planning permission to replace or refurbish air conditioning equipment on its Cambridge Street store.
It would see new condensers and air handling units installed on the roof.
New louvred openings would be put in the external walls and bird mesh ductwork would be added.
A design, access and heritage statement uploaded on North Yorkshire Council’s website by Edinburgh architecture firm Lewis & Hickey Ltd, the agents for the scheme, said the work is required as ongoing maintenance.
It said the scheme "will not affect the condition of the building nor adversely affect the character of the Harrogate Conservation Area".
The firm said in a separate planning document:
We do not consider the required mechanical proposals to be out of keeping for a building of this character and location in a highly urban town centre location. We would also point out that there is precedence for far larger, more numerous and more complex roof top mechanical plant arrangements on the four neighbouring buildings.
