Brierley Homes to restore historic Whixley farmhouse and build two new homes
A plan to refurbish a grade two Victorian farmhouse and build two new homes on a historic farm in Whixley has been approved.
Brierley Homes, which is owned by North Yorkshire Council, applied to carry out alterations to a farmhouse at Stonegate Farm in the village.
The proposal also included plans for the partial demolition and conversion of agricultural buildings at the farm to create two new homes.
According to the plans, two new five-bedroom homes would be created on the site.
Councillors on North Yorkshire Council’s Selby and Ainsty planning committee voted to approve the plan at a meeting today (October 14).

Will Rogers, who spoke on behalf of Brierley Homes at the meeting, said the plan would “secure the long-term future” of the site, which is owned by the council.
He said:
The site contains a grade two listed farmhouse, a collection of historic agricultural buildings and the village’s historic gin gang.
These buildings are currently vacant and require substantial investment and need a viable future if they are to be properly repaired, maintained and preserved.
The site is currently owned by North Yorkshire Council and would then be purchased, subject to planning.
The site includes historic buildings, such as the farmhouse, barns and a gin gang, which date back to the 19th and 20th centuries.
According to planning documents, loss-making Brierley Homes had initially planned for four homes on the site, which included building two new build properties on the farm.
However, this was later scaled down following concerns raised through the consultation process.
Rachel Tyas, case officer at the council, said that while the proposal would cause some harm to the heritage asset, officers were confident that the character of the site would be maintained.
She said:
Whilst the proposal would result in harm through the loss of part of the historic farmyard enclosure, alterations to historic fabric and the domestication associated with the residential conversion, the scheme would retain the character of the principal farmhouse, gin gang and historic barn group and would preserve the key elements which contribute to the significance of the designated heritage assets.
Councillors on the planning committee voted unanimously to approve the plans.
