By-election to go ahead in Harrogate — despite Greens' plea
A by-election is to be held in the Coppice Valley ward after a Harrogate town councillor resigned.
Liberal Democrat Councillor Austin Wildmore resigned from Harrogate Town Council on June 4.
Cllr Wildmore served just over a year as a councillor after being elected in May 2025, with 40% of the vote.
Harrogate Green Party said in a statement on June 10 the vacancy should go unfilled because it could cost £15,000 and full elections are due in May 2027.
But it added Tamsin Worrall would be its candidate if the by-election was triggered by 10 registered Coppice Valley electors calling for it.
The town council confirmed today (June 29) a by-election will take place on Thursday, August 6.
Nominations for candidates must be received by July 10 and a notice of who is standing will be published on Monday, July 13.
The Lib Dems hold 14 of the 19 seats on the town council. The Conservatives have three, Reform UK has one and there is one Independent.
