With no end in sight to the 21-month war in Gaza, a handful of campaigners holding a Justice for Palestinians banners gathered in Ripon yesterday afternoon to hold a silent vigil.
In November 2023, when the first silent vigil was held in the city, the Palestinan dead - including women and children - was estimated at between 10,000 and 12,000 by various agencies.
Now, according to the Gaza health ministry, the death toll is approaching 60,000.
Andy Croft (pictured above, left) who has been organising the peaceful vigils, told the Stray Ferret:
For a year after the war broke out we were here on Market Square every Monday, calling for an end to violence in Israel and Palestine, but the number of dead has continued to rise and now, in addition to Ripon, we are holding vigils in Knaresborough, Thirsk and Northallerton in an attempt to raise awareness of the scale of human suffering.
Too many people have already died and it is heartbreaking to hear about the civilian casualties and see television pictures of tiny babies having to be moved from intensive care incubators because the hospital that they were in no longer has the electricity to power them
