A group of campaigners will be returning to the gates of Menwith Hill on July 4 for their annual Independence from America demonstration.

The event will start at Kettlesing Millenium Village Hall, before campaigners visit the main gates of Menwith Hill where a Declaration of Independence from America will be read.

Campaigners will then return to the village hall, where speeches will be heard from Pembrokeshire Against the Radar Campaign and singing from Leeds-based Commoners Choir.

The event organised by the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign has been held for more than 25 years, calling for activities at the base to be accountable to the UK government and local people.

RAF Menwith Hill

Menwith Hill is one of 15 bases and facilities run by the United States in the UK and is the largest intelligence gathering, interception and surveillance base outside of the U.S.

The 37 giant golf ball shaped radomes that protect the powerful antennas can be seen from miles around in the Yorkshire Dales.

RAF Menwith Hill is nominally a British base, but since the 1950s has been used by the United States as a listening station, originally gathering intelligence on the Soviet Union and its allies during the Cold War, and latterly directing much of its focus towards the Middle East, where it has been implicated in drone strikes.

The Independence from America event will be held on July 4, from 3 to 7pm at Kettlesing Millennium Village Hall.
