The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) will call for the closure of RAF Menwith Hill at a public meeting in Harrogate this weekend.
Although the base is owned by the UK Ministry of Defence, it is used by the US military for intelligence-gathering operations. Its role as one of the UK’s most significant and secretive intelligence facilities has raised concerns among campaigners about the potential security risks it poses to the Harrogate area.
These concerns have intensified following recent comments by US President Donald Trump expressing support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and criticising Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
CND, Yorkshire CND and the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign will hold a day of action on Saturday, October 24, as part of a wider campaign to close US military bases in the UK.
The event will begin with a public meeting at Friends Meeting House in Harrogate at noon. Participants will then travel to RAF Menwith Hill at 2.30pm for a protest calling for the facility’s closure.
