Active North Yorkshire Ripon – The Jack Laugher Centre.

A company has been awarded a £381,000 contract to install solar panels at Ripon’s leisure centre.

North Yorkshire Council has commissioned the work as part of plans to drive renewable energy at the facility and two other centres.

County Durham-based BCS has been awarded the £381,281 contract, which will see solar panels installed at Active North Yorkshire - The Jack Laugher Centre on Dallamires Lane, Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre and Whitby Leisure Centre.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, secured £700,000 in government funding to install clean energy systems in community buildings in July last year.

This funding was awarded to both North Yorkshire Council and City of York Council to carry out renewable energy projects.

At the time, Mr Skaith said:

We’re putting our commitment to supporting communities and tackling climate change into action.

Via the new Mayoral Renewables Fund we will invest £700,000 into community facilities – so they spend less on energy and more on supporting people.

Cllr Richard Foster, executive member for managing our environment at North Yorkshire Council, said the solar panel installations would help to provide “cheaper ways of generating energy”.

In a decision notice, the council said the work at the leisure centre is expected to start this month.

Work on the solar panels will be completed in March 2026.
