North Yorkshire Council has pledged to repair a pothole-ridden road in Knaresborough after the quality of its workmanship was questioned.

Residents raised concerns about a large pothole on Wetherby Road, near St James’s Retail Park, which began to erode within days of repair work by the council.

Jayne Jackson, a Knaresborough resident, told the Stray Ferret the authority “did not clear away any of the pothole debris” following the repair work and left it "scattered across the road and pavement".

She said:

“I would like someone from the council to explain how putting a dollop of tarmac in a very large pothole and leaving all the debris from it at the side of the road is acceptable as a 'repair'.”

However, Ms Jackson said the potholes re-appeared not long after they had been filled in — and highlighted the issue by taking another photo 11 days after the repair work.

She said the state of the road (main image) has now "degraded" and "further holes" have appeared, adding:

“The pothole in question is getting bigger by the week. It is in a shocking state and the loose stones now pose a health and safety threat to little ones on the way to and from school.
“The 'repair' was a shocking effort, and the council should be held to account."

'Someone will get hurt'

Potholes often stir motorists' emotions, so it was unsurprising to find Ms Jackson was not alone in her frustrations.

Several upset residents also took to social media to bemoan the state of Wetherby Road and beyond.

One commented:

“All along Wetherby Road from York Road to Grimbald Bridge is terrible.
“I went along today; a pothole and blocked drains – a great combination on a wet day!”

Another said the state of the road will lead to "someone getting hurt soon".

Road likely to see ‘more major repair scheme’

The Stray Ferret contacted North Yorkshire Council about the claims of poor workmanship, as well as to ask what long-term measures will be put in place to remedy the road conditions.

Karl Battersby, the council’s corporate director of environment, replied:

“We are planning a programme of patching works on Wetherby Road in Knaresborough starting on Monday (February 26).
"We are aware of the concerns around the condition of the road and would like to reassure the public that we are committed to ensuring it is up to a good standard.
“In addition to patching, officers will soon be developing a list of schemes to be added to our forward programme which will be confirmed in August. This will allow us to develop the annual programme for delivery in 2025/26. It will likely see a more major repair scheme delivered on this stretch of road.”
