Council bosses say they “remain committed” to developing land at Cardale Park in Harrogate to increase care services three years after purchasing it.
The three-acre site on Beckwith Head Road in Harrogate was previously owned by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, which runs mental health services in the district.
The former North Yorkshire County Council completed a purchase of the site for £1.8 million with the intention of developing it for care services.
At the time, the authority said it had bought the land in order to progress a “scheme to assist with social care market development in the Harrogate area”.
However, the site has so far remained undeveloped.
The Stray Ferret approached the council to ask whether it had progressed any plans to develop the site since it last issued a statement on the matter in 2023.
Cllr Michael Harrison, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for health and adult services, said:
We remain committed to developing the site at Cardale Park as part of our strategy to provide a range of care and support services in Harrogate, most notably Extra Care and supported housing.
Cllr Harrison added that he expected the site to be part of a 10-year council programme, which aims to "facilitate the development of a wide range of supported accommodation" across North Yorkshire.
Senior councillors will discuss the report at a meeting on October 21.
The land at Cardale Park was previously given approval for a 36-bed mental health facility on the site, following the closure of Harrogate District Hospital’s Briary Unit, which helped adults with mental illness.
However, those plans were dropped in 2019 and inpatients on the unit were sent to Foss Park Hospital in York instead.
