North Yorkshire Council has said there have been "no breaches of planning" at the site of the new Tesco supermarket in Harrogate.

Tesco was granted planning permission a year ago to create a store, petrol station and 209-space car park in a scheme that will generate more than 100 jobs.

Site work has finally begun at the former gasworks at the junction of Skipton Road and Ripon Road in New Park.

Yesterday The Stray Ferret reported Cllr Monika Slater, a Liberal Democrat who represents Bilton Grange and New Park on North Yorkshire Council, had written to Tesco expressing concerns that the work began without approval and could pose a risk to the public.

But Nick Turpin, the council's planning manager for the Harrogate area, said:

“Tesco is removing the trees in line with planning permissions. Therefore, there are no breaches of planning control to investigate.
“However, planning officers will continue to monitor the situation as the development progresses.”

A Tesco spokesperson said:

“We have worked very closely with council officers and the planning committee every step of the way to agree the final design of our new Harrogate store and we will ensure that all work is carried out in line with agreed conditions.
“We take our obligations with regards to safety of residents very seriously, as we do with all planning and building projects - and this will remain front of mind throughout the build.”

Cllr Slater said she was "pleased that Tesco have responded in a positive manner with assurances that they will carry out the work carefully and with full regard to residents and workers".

She added:

"We all accept that the store is going ahead and we hope it will be of benefit to the community.  I spoke to the site manager and will continue to keep in contact with him with any concerns that residents may have during the course of the construction."
