North Yorkshire Council is hoping to bid for a £275,000 Arts Council grant to help pay for repairs to the Royal Pump Room Museum in Harrogate.
The council submitted an expression of interest last week and is waiting to hear whether or not it will be allowed to apply for the cash, which would come from the latest round of the Arts Council’s Museum Estate and Development (MEND) funding.
Round five of MEND has £25 million to disburse, and grants of between £50,000 and £5 million are available to non-national accredited museums based in England, or local authorities responsible for them.
Danielle Daglan, the council’s head of culture and archives, told the Stray Ferret:
If we are invited to apply following expression of interest, we will be submitting a bid of £275,000 to improve the exterior of the Royal Pump Room Museum in Harrogate to ensure the building is fit for purpose in the long-term.
The work would include the removal of weathered stonework, moss growth and vegetation, carrying out lime mortar repairs, raking and repointing.
The proposed schedule of works and funding opportunities would be reviewed following any MEND funding decision.
If the council is invited to apply for the funding, it will have from July 14 to October 2 to submit its application.
According to council data published ahead of a meeting of the housing and leisure overview and scrutiny committee today, visitor numbers increased last year across North Yorkshire’s cultural and leisure facilities.
Nevertheless, performance was affected in the third and fourth quarters of the 2024-25 financial year by the closure of the Royal Pump Room Museum.
The museum was closed for 12 weeks from November 8 until January 25 due to maintenance issues related to a faulty boiler.
